Fireworks are a beloved Fourth of July tradition. Many people will be celebrating with shows of these bright bursts of color, but it’s important to remember to take safety precautions while using fireworks.

Independence Day, also called the Fourth of July or July 4th, in the United States, is the annual celebration of nationhood. It commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. Fireworks are the most iconic symbol of the Fourth of July and the tradition of setting them off dates all the way back to the first organized celebration of Independence Day in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777. Many people will choose to continue the tradition this holiday weekend. We’ve put together a list of safety tips to follow if you do!

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
  • Older children should use them only under close adult supervision.
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.
  • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands.
  • Never light them indoors.
  • Only use them away from people, houses, and flammable material.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.
